Trump’s Argentina Rescue Benefits a Wealthy US Billionaire with Strong Connections

Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled a $20 billion package to stabilize Argentina’s economy, a move criticized for benefiting wealthy investors rather than ordinary Americans. Among those poised to gain significantly is billionaire hedge fund manager Rob Citrone, who has heavily invested in Argentine assets amidst the country’s economic turmoil. Despite Argentinaโ€™s historical debt crises, including inflation rates exceeding 200% in 2023, Citrone bet on the pro-reform policies of newly elected President Javier Milei. Following austerity measures and sharp spending cuts, Argentina initially saw some economic growth, but this led to rising unemployment and increased public discontent, jeopardizing Milei’s political standing.

Citrone, a longtime friend and former colleague of Bessent, intervened to advocate for U.S. support through the IMF when Argentina’s economic situation deteriorated. His investments included significant purchases of Argentine bonds, which magnified the potential rewards from the U.S. assistance package. The relationship between Bessent and Citrone is well-established, having helped each other financially in the past. As Argentina’s crisis deepened, the U.S. bailout effectively provided a lifeline for Milei and stabilized the peso, allowing the Argentine elite to convert their assets to dollars, leading to concerns about capital flight.

Additionally, lobbying efforts by Tactic Global, linked to CPAC leadership, played a role in facilitating U.S.-Argentina relations, further intertwining political and financial interests. The situation emphasizes complex dynamics between political support and financial investments in economically distressed countries.
