‘Fortnite’ Players React as Developers Uncover Real Meaning of Peacemaker Dance Emote and Quickly Remove It

Epic Games, the developers behind Fortnite, recently faced a controversy after introducing a Peacemaker skin featuring John Cena. The issue arose when the latest episode of the show revealed that Peacemaker is in a universe called Earth-X, where Nazis won World War II, transforming the American flag into one with a swastika. This twist prompted a closer examination of Peacemaker’s dance from the opening sequence, which fans noted could vaguely resemble a swastika shape.

In light of this, Epic Games quickly decided to disable the “Peaceful Hips Emote” from Fortnite while they investigated the creative intentions behind the collaboration with Warner Bros and DC. They issued a refund to players who had purchased the emote, citing concerns over its potential implications, especially given that several countries, particularly Germany, have strict laws against displaying Nazi symbols.

Though there’s no official confirmation that the dance was designed to mimic a swastika, the gaming community’s sensitivity to any Nazi-related references led Epic to act proactively. The developers are now left with furrowed brows, while Warner Bros maintains plausible deniability, suggesting the dance was merely a fun concept. The situation highlights the precarity of cross-media collaborations, particularly when navigating themes with historical significance.
