On Friday, around 20 anti-vaccine activists rallied outside the CDC headquarters in Atlanta in support of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. This gathering was organized by Children’s Health Defense, the advocacy group led by Kennedy prior to his political career. The rally coincided with a week of scrutiny for Kennedy, particularly after a controversial press conference where he and Trump linked the painkiller Tylenol to an autism epidemic.
The choice of location was poignant, as it was near a CVS where a gunman had recently targeted the CDC due to his anti-vaccine beliefs. Signs at the rally included slogans like โMake America Healthy Againโ and โAnti-Science, Pro-Informed Consent.โ Some attendees expressed personal stories, like occupational therapist Christy Kennedy, who advocated for alternatives to pharmaceutical solutions for children.
Mike Arnold, who has protested at the CDC for seven years, shared a conspiracy-driven journey that led him to question many established facts. Other attendees supported Trump’s warning against Tylenol, despite it being a recommended method to prevent birth defects. Kendra Foltz Biegalski and Phoebe Eckhardt, both involved in local politics, spoke passionately against vaccines, with Eckhardt emphasizing a belief that vaccinations harm children. Throughout the event, there was an absence of counter-protesters, though some bystanders expressed disapproval. A memorial for a fallen officer and signs supporting laid-off CDC workers were present across the street, highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding public health discourse.
