Adam Sandler has revealed that Carl Weathers was set to play a significant role in the upcoming “Happy Gilmore 2,” but sadly passed away earlier this year. The sequel is scheduled for Netflix release on July 25, 2025. Weathers originally portrayed Chubbs Peterson, a pivotal character who mentored Sandler’s Happy Gilmore in the 1996 hit. His role involved substantial physical demands that resulted in lasting pain, yet he delivered a memorable performance that has influenced the sequel’s narrative.
In a recent interview, Sandler mentioned that he and Weathers were excited about the film before his untimely death on February 1, 2024, at the age of 76. The script had to undergo significant rewrites following Weathers’ passing, with references to Chubbs being integrated throughout. Originally, the plot included a storyline involving Chubbs’ son, who blamed Happy for his father’s death, featuring dream sequences with the character.
Director Kyle Newacheck emphasized that Weathers’ spirit will remain alive in the film, despite his physical absence. The sequel will also see the return of several original cast members, like Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen, alongside new additions like Travis Kelce and Bad Bunny. Following Weathers’ death, Sandler paid tribute to him as a “true great man,” while Weathers’ family acknowledged his impactful legacy in the arts, sports, and film.
