Trump’s Defense Secretary Appears to Respect Men Opposing Women’s Voting Rights

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has faced scrutiny for his association with Doug Wilson, a Christian nationalist pastor who believes women should not vote. Hegseth shared a CNN video featuring Wilson, who advocates for a society where women are seen as subservient to men and cannot cast ballots. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed Hegseth appreciates Wilson’s teachings. The video included other pastors who supported repealing the 19th Amendment, suggesting that voting should be limited to male heads of households. Hegseth’s history includes allegations from his ex-sister-in-law claiming he stated women shouldn’t vote or work, which he has denied.

During his confirmation hearing, Hegseth retracted previous claims that women shouldn’t serve in combat roles. Other political figures, like John McEntee, have also made controversial remarks about women’s suffrage, with McEntee joking about the 19th Amendment needing to go. Critics of recent legislation, like the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, warn that such measures could disenfranchise many married women by requiring voter identification that doesn’t match their adopted surnames. Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar expressed concern that this voter suppression initiative disproportionately affects women. While Trump has not publicly commented on Hegsethโ€™s recent activity, he supports the challenged SAVE Act and has previously made dismissive remarks about women’s voting rights.
