Donald Trump’s effort to host the G-7 summit at his Doral golf course in 2019 faced significant backlash from critics concerned about his conflicts of interest and personal enrichment. The criticism was overwhelming, leading Trump to withdraw the proposal, although the summit was ultimately cancelled due to COVID-19. Recently, however, Trump announced that Doral will host the G-20 summit next year, which will include an even larger group of global leaders and their entourages.
During his announcement, Trump claimed that the decision to hold the summit at Doral was not financially motivated, emphasizing its prime location near the airport and its aesthetic appeal. He stated that officials had requested the summit be held at his property, asserting that the arrangement wouldn’t involve profit for him. Nevertheless, organizing the three-day event will incur significant costs, including security and logistical expenses.
Doral, originally built in the 1960s, has struggled in recent years, but Trump has made efforts to revitalize it since buying it out of bankruptcy in 2012. Although revenue dropped significantly in 2019, recent disclosures suggest an uptick in its financial performance.
Concerns about the appropriateness of holding a major international summit at Trump’s property have persisted. Initially, Republican Senator Mike Simpson opposed the 2019 idea due to its political implications, but he has since changed his stance and now supports hosting the G-20 at Doral.
