The third Pan-African Catholic Jubilee on Theology, Society, and Pastoral Life will take place from August 5 to 10 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, themed “Journeying Together in Hope as a Church Family of God in Africa.” This significant gathering will unite African Catholic theologians, church leaders, pastoral agents, and ecumenical partners to address the pressing challenges facing the continent today, such as social justice, peace, and the impact of artificial intelligence.
Co-convener Sister Agnes Sory emphasized the need for collaboration and reflection on the Church’s mission amidst contemporary issues. This event coincides with key ecclesial milestones, including the celebration of Christianity’s 2025th anniversary and the implementation of the synodal process’s Final Document. The congress provides a platform for diverse voices, including laity and clergy from various nationalities, to engage in meaningful dialogue, promoting unity despite differences.
Key themes will explore the traditional African dialogue method, the “palaver,” which encourages inclusive participation, respects diverse voices, and seeks communal resolutions. This approach can foster decision-making informed by cultural wisdom and collective management, reflecting values of peace, harmony, and community.
The congress aims to empower young people, women, and local leaders by incorporating their narratives and aspirations into discussions about the Church’s future. Ultimately, the congress serves as a space for collaborative reflection and discernment, embodying hope and signaling the commitment to addressing social and spiritual challenges faced by Africans today.
