Israel Has Claimed the Lives of Nearly 200 Palestinian Journalists in Gaza

Since the onset of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, nearly 200 Palestinian journalists have been killed, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Recent fatalities include six journalists from Al Jazeera and a freelancer, who were killed by Israeli military strikes in Gaza City. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that one of the deceased, Anas al-Sharif, was a “Hamas terrorist” posing as a journalist; however, this allegation was vehemently denied by al-Sharif prior to his death, and Al Jazeera condemned these assertions as attempts to justify the targeting of its journalists.

Al Jazeera described al-Sharif, who had reported on the crisis from the front lines, as “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists.” His final reports highlighted the dire conditions in Gaza, including rising starvation deaths. The deaths of these journalists mark a horrific chapter in the war, with CPJ noting that the number of journalists killed since October exceeds global fatalities from 2020 to 2022 combined.

Press freedom organizations condemned the killings, labeling them as “murder” and a systematic attempt to suppress information. They called for urgent actions, including a meeting of the UN Security Council to address these issues. Despite the severity of the situation, U.S. officials have not publicly condemned the latest killings. Al-Sharif had previously expressed his commitment to truth, stating, โ€œIf I die, I die steadfast upon my principles.โ€
