Idaho Experienced a One-Third Decline in Obstetricians Following Its Abortion Ban

In June 2022, Idaho’s strict trigger ban on abortions took effect, leading to significant fallout in the state’s healthcare landscape. The Biden administration’s Department of Justice filed a lawsuit claiming the ban conflicted with federal laws requiring hospitals to stabilize patients, including providing necessary abortions in emergencies. This legal battle culminated in the closure of a rural maternity ward due to the challenging legal climate.

A new study published in JAMA Network Open reveals that more than a third of Idaho’s obstetricians (OBs) left their positions between August 2022 and December 2024, with the majority departing the state altogether. This decline correlates with fears of legal repercussions for providing needed emergency care, exacerbating existing maternity care deserts in Idaho. Currently, 30% of the stateโ€™s counties lack adequate access to maternity services, and 85% of the remaining OBs are concentrated in the seven largest counties.

Healthcare experts emphasize that these recent trends highlight the broader implications of abortion bans, disturbing not just abortion access but also overall reproductive healthcare. As advocacy efforts continue to roll out proposals for new abortion rights measures, researchers plan to further investigate the repercussions of the ban, aiming to bolster healthcare access in Idaho.
